Testing & Tweaking

counterpointToday, a lot of time was taken up messing with the shopping component, VirtueMart. One of the Italian Mambo team is keen to use it, but ran into some annoying technical issues. It's a while since I last looked at it, and how it has grown! Still only one component, but around ten modules and a mambot or two. Thought of installing it into Mambo 4.6 as a test of both, but the job of installing a dozen items was a bit daunting.

But then there was the thought that VirtueMart would be a good test of the new integrated installer. It can handle a whole composite package, just working its way through the XML files, installing each item to its correct location.

So the job was to unzip all the VirtueMart packages into one directory, then zip them all up again into a single file. That wasn't too difficult. Then, amazingly it all installed just as planned! Found a couple of incompatibilities between VirtueMart and Mambo 4.6 to sort out. More work! But the integrated installer is going to save a lot of time, and also a lot of confusion for people who don't realise that some plugins only work as a combination.
